“Come on cupcake! Stop being such a girl!” Caine called down as she struggled to climb up.
“Why do we have to go on the freaking roof anyways?”
“Best spot to talk. The last place anyone looks is on the roof.”
“That last place anyone looks? What are you talking about?” she snapped.
“There won’t be an interruptions up here. Hustle your ass princess.” He grinned down at her as she glared up at him before she went back to muttering about the millions of germs that were probably on the fire escape.
“It just rained!”
“Oh sure! As if the rain is the cleanest substance on earth. Do you know how much bacteria is in rain?”
“I’m sure you do!”
She grunted as she pulled herself onto the roof. She slapped away his helping hands. God, she was so prickly. The only time she really let him touch her was when she was sleeping.
“You bet I know how much bacteria is in the rain! Do you know how disgusting-”
“I like your hair.”
“Oh!”
He turned around from her to hid his grin when her hand flew to her hair and she tugged self-consciously at it. He absently splashed his foot in a puddle and his grin only widened when he saw her frown and take a step back.
“Thanks. I think it looks alright. Rebecca said that I should be edgier…but I thought it looked even better how it was before,” she snapped.
He heaved a sigh. “Look. I’m sorry. I was just trying to help. There are things that you don’t understand and besides I thought that you would appreciate being clean.”
“I do appreciate it! And I’m grateful!” she snapped.
“You could have fooled me,” Caine said with a laugh before he sighed and sat down. The pavement was cool so he stretched out on his back and stacked his hands behind his head.
“Did you ever think about the things that go bump in the night?”
Alana frowned down at him as she tugged on her sleeve. “What are you talking about?”
“You know…the boogey man? Ghosts? Vampires?”
She shrugged. “I guess. I mean my dad used to tell me stories about werewolves and crap but they were just stories.”
“Are you sure about that?”
“Oh come on Duncaine! Are you seriously going to tell me that you believe in that stuff?”
He yawned. “Not only do I believe in it…I live it.”
“Umm…are you supposed to be taking any meds? I mean I know you escaped from an asylum. It’s okay Duncaine. It’s all going to be okay.” She reached down and patted his shoulder with an earnest expression on her face.
“Alana,” he sighed as he rolled to his feet. “Come on! You’re smart. You’ve seen more in the last thirty-six hours then most humans see their entire life. Are you just going to ignore it?”
“Wh-what do you mean…humans?”
Caine stepped closer to her as a rumbled growl worked its way up his chest. Her eyes widened then darted away. He could smell fear seeping out of her pores. The last thing he wanted to do was scare her. Taking a calming breath he stared intently at her.
“Alana, things that go bump in the night sometimes bite. You know what I’m talking about.” He took her hand, the hand that he had accidentally bitten, and clasped it between both of his.
“And when they bite sometimes things change. Sometimes humans just aren’t humans anymore.”
“I-I went to the doctor.”
“Yeah,” he said. “A doctor who wasn’t fully human herself. I smelled her all over you Princess. It’s a good thing you didn’t take those pills. Otherwise who knows what could have happened.”
She snatched her hand away from his. “Duncaine! What are you saying?”
He slipped his hand around her waist as she shifted to move away from him. “I don’t know how to be gentle Alana. I don’t know how to work my way up to saying what I need to say. I’ve always been blunt and that’s not going to change. You know what I’m saying. Why do you think you bashed my head in back at the house? You saw me turn into the wolf. Not only that you knew it was me in the woods. You called me by name. Running from the truth doesn’t make it less real. I should know.”
“What does this have to do with me?”
“One of your parents was like me. A Lycan. A werewolf if you want to use the more common term. So, you’re a half breed. And when my saliva mixed with your blood it changed you. It made you-”
“Into a freak?” She succeeded in pulling away from him and spun on her heel only to be tugged back toward him. Closing her eyes she wrapped her arms around herself as if to ward off his words.
“You are who you always were Alana.”
“How can you say that Duncaine? I’m nothing like I was before! I hear things I shouldn’t, I smell things that I wish I didn’t and my emotions are all over the place.”
“Give it time Princess. Your body has to adjust to all the changes going on inside of you. Most of us are raised knowing who and what we are.”
She clenched her hands. “I thought I was too.”
Well, at least things are sort of on the way to okay between Caine and Alana. If nothing else, she is now out of the dark, even if she is still in some degree of denial.
OMG WHO HAS JULIUS? Please let it be Greg. Please please please please PLEASE let it be Greg! *trembles in anticipation*

Or if you can I haven’t figured it out yet! *shrug* So I had to figure out which pose I wanted to go for and use the pause button since my freezer clock was somewhere in that tiny apartment. To get that pic I used ‘goose’ from the flirt menu and just used facial overlays. I didn’t know he was going to look so smoldering though! LOL! Sorry it took me so long to get here. I’m still redoing my blogrolls and finding major holes.
I found this incredibly sweet and touching. Alana’s strange remote and disconnected reaction surprised me – Caine has definitely felt it when she’s angry and upset. She’s not particularly calculating or manipulative so what’s going on?
Also REALLY loved the scene between Nolan and Caine – that was just great! You nail both characters!
Extremely smooth and emotionally clear writing. I loved this one!!!

I laughed so hard when he dropped her! By the angle of them in the picture, I was thinking, ‘Nah, he wouldn’t do that. Would he?’ And he did! LMAO. Love the tension between them, those two just crackle together! When I was writing that I head Caine’s voice in my head and had to stifle my own laughter! haha!!
It’s really more of a blind need. If Caine would have gone with the flow he would have gotten laid because she’s in heat and wanting her mate but she would have hated herself in the end. It wasn’t a situation he wanted to find himself in. I don’t blame him. Yeah, calling him Duncaine is a way to keep distance between them!
